Travel on the NH 66 Vengalam–Ramanattukara stretch is about to undergo a major change. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has officially notified the toll rates for this vital bypass, and the Olavanna Toll Plaza (frequently referred to as the Pantheerankavu toll plaza) is set to begin full operations this week. Whether you are a local resident or a frequent long-distance traveler, here is everything you need to know about the new rates, concessions, and rules starting January 2026.
When Does it Start?
Following a trial run that began on Saturday, January 10, the official notification will be published in major media outlets on Monday, January 12. Full toll collection is expected to commence immediately after midnight on January 12 (the early hours of January 13).
The Cost of Convenience: Toll Rates and Penalties
The Ministry has made it clear that FASTag is the preferred method of payment. To encourage digital adoption, the government has implemented a tiered pricing structure based on your payment method:
- FASTag Users: Will pay the standard notified rates.
- UPI/Digital Payments: Vehicles without FASTag paying via UPI will be charged an additional 25% on top of the base rate.
- Cash Payments: If you choose to pay in cash, be prepared to pay double the toll amount.
Relief for Local Residents and Regular Commuters
Recognizing the impact on those living near the plaza, several concession schemes have been introduced:
- Local Residents’ Pass: Permanent residents living within a 20-kilometer radius of the Olavanna toll plaza are eligible for a monthly pass priced at ₹340. This pass allows for unlimited crossings for one month. Note: You will need to submit proof of residence and vehicle ownership to avail of this.
- Return Journey Discount: If you make a return trip through the plaza within 24 hours, you will only be charged half the toll amount for the return leg.
- District Commercial Vehicles: Commercial vehicles registered in Kozhikode district (provided they have a FASTag and are not under a national permit) are eligible for a 50% concession.
- Annual National Pass: An annual FASTag pass is available for ₹3,000, which permits up to 200 crossings at any toll plaza across India.
Efficiency and Purpose
The operational management of the Olavanna plaza has been entrusted to Hule Constructions, a Maharashtra-based firm. To ensure a seamless flow of traffic and minimize congestion on the bypass, the plaza is equipped with modern sensors designed for rapid FASTag processing. This infrastructure is a critical component of the NH 66 expansion project; the toll revenue generated will be directly reinvested into the maintenance and future development of this high-speed corridor, which has already significantly reduced travel times between northern and southern Kerala.
