Kozhikode transforms into a dazzling wonderland as the Christmas-New Year light show at Mananchira Maidan kicks off, inaugurated by Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas on December 22, 2025. Under the theme ‘Illuminating Joy, Spreading Harmony’, this event blends cutting-edge illuminations with the historic charm of the square, running until January 2, 2026.

Spectacular Light Installations

Mananchira Maidan boasts a giant red-and-gold dragon as its centerpiece, towering over the square and casting mesmerizing reflections in the surrounding water body during evening hours. Visitors walk through the ‘Tunnel of Lights’, a 100-meter pathway enveloped in thousands of twinkling blue LEDs that mimic a starry night sky. A crystal forest of illuminated sculptures sparkles nearby, alongside interactive floral pathways where lights respond to footsteps, adding a playful touch. Geometric light art pieces and festooned trees complete the scene, with synchronized projections on colonial-era buildings enhancing the immersive experience.

Inauguration and Theme Insights

P.A. Mohammed Riyas, Kerala’s Tourism Minister, switched on the lights at 7 p.m. on December 22, highlighting the event’s role in boosting winter tourism. The theme ‘Illuminating Joy, Spreading Harmony’ promotes unity through light, drawing from Kozhikode’s multicultural heritage. The square’s recent renovation, costing 4.38 crore rupees, restored its fountains, walkways, and green spaces, making it an ideal venue for such spectacles. Local authorities expect over 50,000 visitors during the 12-day run, with free entry and extended timings until 10 p.m.

Broader District Context

This festive highlight coincides with district-wide pushes for waqf property registrations, urged by community leaders to safeguard historic sites amid urban growth. Residents call for streamlined processes at local offices, tying into Kozhikode’s rich Islamic heritage around Mananchira. Infrastructure concerns persist, notably OVC road renovations delayed by monsoon damage and funding issues, impacting connectivity to key areas like the beach. These updates frame the light show as a beacon of progress amid ongoing civic improvements.
