In the quiet town of Nadapuram, Kozhikode, a potential catastrophe was narrowly avoided thanks to the sharp instincts and quick actions of a mother and son. Junaid, a 28-year-old online worker for a Dubai-based firm, and his mother Asiya from Palliprakkandiyil in Kacheri, detected a dangerous LPG gas leak late one night, preventing what could have been a devastating explosion at a local tea stall. Their story of vigilance and community spirit has inspired residents, leading to a heartfelt public honor for their bravery.

The Night of Alertness and Discovery

It was late at night when Junaid returned home to Kacheri after a day’s work in nearby Kummankode. As he approached his house, a strong, pungent smell of cooking gas hit him, wafting from the direction of the Kalyani Tea Stall, a popular eatery situated close to the local Balavadi. Unsure of whom to wake at that ungodly hour and concerned for immediate safety, Junaid hurried home to inform his mother Asiya instead of taking risks alone. Asiya, recognizing the gravity of the situation from her son’s description, wasted no time and urged him to return to the spot to pinpoint the source of the leak, showcasing the deep bond and trust between them that turned a routine night into one of heroism.

Swift Action Saves the Day

Undeterred, Junaid grabbed a friend and headed back to the tea stall, where the gas odor lingered ominously in the air, heightening the danger in the still night. Together, they roused nearby residents, spreading the alarm to ensure no one remained unaware of the peril. They then reached out to the shop owner, Kunjyekkan, who rushed to the scene around 2 a.m. Upon opening the stall, they discovered the culprit: a large LPG cylinder connected to the stove inside was leaking gas steadily, which could have ignited into a massive blaze at any moment, endangering lives and properties in the densely populated area near Nadapuram. This coordinated response not only contained the immediate threat but also highlighted how ordinary citizens can become lifesavers through prompt collective action.

Community Gratitude and Felicitation

The local community wasted no time in expressing their profound gratitude to Junaid and Asiya for their life-saving intervention. A special felicitation function was organized at the Kacheri Public Library, where Junaid was presented with a memento by P M Nanu, the Taluk Vice President of the Library Council. Son of Shoukkathali from Palliprakkandi, Junaid’s current base in Kummankode town did not stop him from protecting his roots, embodying the true spirit of neighborhood solidarity in Kozhikode’s Nadapuram region. This event underscored the importance of community recognition in encouraging such vigilant behaviors among residents.
