Beypore, the historic port town in Kozhikode, Kerala, is on the cusp of global recognition. Kerala Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas will declare it an international tourism destination at the Global Responsible Tourism Meet on February 7-8, 2026.

This milestone revives Beypore’s ancient legacy as a maritime powerhouse connecting the Malabar Coast to West Asia and Europe

Beypore’s Storied Maritime Heritage

Beypore has thrived as a shipbuilding hub since ancient times, crafting traditional Arabian vessels called Urus or Dhows. Merchants from Arabs, Romans, Chinese, and Europeans flocked here for trade in spices and commodities, with evidence linking it to the Mesopotamian maritime silk route.

Tipu Sultan renamed it “Sultan Pattanam,” underscoring its strategic importance as a free port under the Zamorins, where Moplah traders bridged local Nairs and Arab merchants. The East India Company later expanded its shipyards in the 19th century, cementing Beypore’s role in Indian Ocean trade.

Today, visitors can witness artisans building massive wooden Urus at the historic yard, a craft passed down generations.

Key Attractions Beckoning Tourists

Beypore Beach captivates with its pristine sands where the Chaliyar River meets the Arabian Sea, offering refreshing vibes and Ayurvedic centers. The iconic Pulimuttu rock pier, now a 1-km walkway into the sea, delivers thrilling strolls amid crashing waves.

Nearby, the Beypore Lighthouse provides panoramic sea views, especially at sunset, while the harbor buzzes with fishermen and anchored boats. Dolphin spotting at Dolphin Point adds adventure, alongside the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary and estuary for birdwatching and eco-tours.

The Beypore Walkway along the waterfront features shaded benches and heritage views, perfect for evening leisure.

Global Responsible Tourism Meet 2026

Hosted in Beypore on February 7-8, the meet’s theme is “Responsible, Resilient & Inclusive Tourism for a Sustainable Future.” It gathers policymakers, experts, and practitioners to discuss climate change, women-led tourism, and sustainable marketing.

Kerala leaders will showcase the Beypore model, positioning the Malabar region for growth.
