In Edachery near Vadakara, Kozhikode, the Thanal Daya Rehabilitation Trust organized a massive fundraising event called “Chaya Thanal” (Tea Shade) on April 28-29, 2026, drawing thousands who contributed generously to support destitute patients. This heartfelt rally raised over ₹1.41 crore in just two days, showcasing Kerala’s spirit of compassion for the vulnerable.

Thanal Edachery is a nonprofit rehabilitation center in Edachery, Kozhikode district, dedicated to providing shelter, medical care, and palliative support to homeless individuals, destitute patients, and those abandoned by families. Established around 2008, it accommodates up to 600 residents from Kerala and neighboring states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, offering services including free dialysis for 150 people, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and pain management for over 200 inmates. Monthly operational costs reach ₹25 lakh, prompting innovative fundraisers like “Chaya Thanal” to sustain its vital work.

The event kicked off on April 28 with expectations of 5,000 attendees, but over 18,000 people poured in until late night, turning it into a grand public rally for hope. Volunteers served tea and snacks while holding up QR codes for instant donations; within hours, ₹57.42 lakh in cash was collected on day one, plus ₹84 lakh in pledges, totaling ₹1.41 crore by the end. Heartwarming contributions included four gold sovereigns, jewelry donations, and support from women, children, and elders across Kerala, proving the power of collective kindness.

Thanal has become a lifeline, reuniting the abandoned with a sense of family through selfless volunteer care led by figures like Dr. Idris. Recent student visits, such as from Meppayyur Government Vocational Higher Secondary School’s Student Police Cadets, highlight ongoing community involvement via initiatives like “Thanalay Kood” (Shade Together), where monthly letters connect youth with 200+ homeless residents. This rally not only eases financial burdens but amplifies Thanal’s mission, ensuring treatment for bedridden patients over 18 without family support.

In a region known for its cultural warmth, events like “Chaya Thanal” reflect Kozhikode’s commitment to social welfare amid rising needs for elderly and destitute care. The overwhelming response underscores how grassroots philanthropy can fund ₹25 lakh monthly expenses, inspiring similar efforts statewide.
